What they are made of: Ed Macfarlane, Jack Savidge & Edd Gibson make up Friendly Fires, a St Albans indie dance/pop outfit. After a string of EPs from 2006 to 2007, they finally jump on board to release their first debut self-titled album.

For starters: Formed in 2000, they originally started off with music “written like sixth-form poetry, with acoustic guitars”, and got “so pissed about it”, they decided to completely change their music direction and “make the most inane songs they could”.

Who, They?: MGMT, previously known as The Management, is made up of members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden. Hype began when critics started picking up the group, name dropping them for their list of music to hear or artistes to watch out for. They have been opening acts for big names like Radiohead and M.I.A.

Pop-ular: The band gained popularity through famous music sites/blogs, such as Stereogum. Their music is influenced by both African popular music and Western classical music, and they described it as “Upper West Side Soweto”.

Emiliana Torrini

Who is it?: Her surname goes Daviosdottir, and she is an Icelandic singer, best known for performing “Gollum’s Song”, during the ending credits of Peter Jackson’s film, The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers. Elsewhere, Grey’s Anatomy, and One Tree Hill, had both used her songs in episodes of the series. She is, also, a co-writer for Kylie Minogue’s hit single, “Slow”.
