Music Reviews: #63 – Haiti

Both songs will pass on goodwill and karma, but which will be better? As a person who was once a fan of general pop and its various versions of covers, then subsequently, in recent times, much prefers the original versions, will they surpass my expectations and the benchmarks set by the original artistes?

Review & Rating

Everybody Hurts
Helping Haiti
Artistes: Mariah Carey, Jon Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Miley Cyrus, Take That, Susan Boyle, Joe McElderry, Cheryl Cole, JLS, Mika, Michael Bublé, James Blunt, James Morrison and Westlife.

On first listen, I didn’t like it. I got a little uncomfortable with the switching of vocals and tones from the various artistes involved, but that was just a personal issue. Then there was the original.

On second listen, it was generally alright. They had picked an excellent song choice from the past to cover, and some of the artistes do have reputable status to garner the sales volume in order to raise the funds received. It was a pity that they did not ask R.E.M. themselves to be involved in this.

Overall verdict: Buy R.E.M.’s version instead.

We Are The World 25 For Haiti
Various Artistes
Artistes: Justin Bieber, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Nettles, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson (original), Janet Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus, Enrique Iglesias, Jamie Foxx, Wyclef Jean, Adam Levine, P!nk, BeBe Winans, Usher, Celine Dion, Orianthi, Fergie, Nick Jonas, Toni Braxton, Mary Mary, Isaac Slade, Lil’ Wayne, Carlos Santana, Akon, T-Pain, LL Cool J, Will.I.Am, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Swizz Beatz, Iyaz, Kanye West, Al Jardine, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas, Gladys Knight, Benji Madden, Joel Madden, Katharine McPhee, Jason Mraz, Mya, Freda Payne, A.R. Rahman, Raphael Saadiq, Trey Songz, Musiq Soulchild, Jordin Sparks, Robin Thicke, Alex Williams, Rob Thomas, Vince Vaughn, Ann Wilson, Brian Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Patti Austin, Bizzy Bone, Ethan Bortnick, Jeff Bridges, Zac Brown, Brandy, Kristian Bush, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Hayden Panettiere, Kid Cudi, Faith Evans, Melanie Fiona, Sean Garrett, Tyrese Gibson, Anthony Hamilton, Keri Hilson, Julianne Hough, India.Arie, Randy Jackson, Taj Jackson, Taryll Jackson, TJ Jackson.

Just the line-up will make you gasp; Wyclef Jean sure got the contacts and went all the way to gather these artistes involved together to record this charity single.

Once again, the switching of artistes and vocals did not please, as there were fluctuations (a good example is Jennifer Nettles right after Jennifer Hudson; Hudson set the bar high and Nettles just whisked through it).

Another part was auto-tune. I am not sure if it was a great move to include in artistes that use them; it may feel a little bit inhumane and lack of emotions on that part. T-Pain and Lil’ Wayne are obvious targets, and I was wondering about Akon.

But on the plus side, including the original Michael Jackson vocals was nice. It showed that they did considered him as a factor. LL Cool J’s rap is great inclusion and a fresh vibe from the old too.

Overall verdict: Buy the original.
